pretty weird to feel how small this gun was… is… this is a replica of the gun that shot Trayvon, holding nothing but a bag of Skittles, made with nothing but a Skittles box. One of more than 100 new pieces for my “Trash Talking” exhibit debuting this Summer. I’ve made several other guns from recycled material for the show that each highlight a shooting incident. The research rabbit hole went deep and dark. It’s sickening to learn how often and why shooters carry small, portable handguns.
showing the ol’ making-of. This is one of many new sculptures for my upcoming show, each hand-made from 100% recycled material chosen very intentionally to tell a specific story. This piece is talking about Trayvon, race, and the tragedies of gun ownership in this country. Other pieces talk about products, throw away consumer culture, waste, junk food politics and the fossil fuel industry, being that the physical show will be installed on the site of an old gas station mini mart in Seattle.
haven’t felt this “good”, or strong, or… something… about my work in a very long time, if not ever. Like there’s something special happening. What is it? I don’t know. I fell down some research rabbit holes and cooked a bunch of easter eggs into my new work. The show should be “fun” but with pieces like this one, it’ll also be heavy. I really have no idea how any of this will actually turn out.
mounted this piece on the wall to show how it’ll exhibit this Summer. And i’ll have small metal plaques like this one (swipe it bigger) to help tell the story about each piece in the show.
if you’ll be anywhere near Seattle this Summer, come see this piece in person. I’ll have more than 100 other sculptures exhibiting with this. I haven’t shown anywhere for 8 yrs. And it’s only been a cool 16 years since I’ve shown in my hometown. Oh, and did I mention I’ll be showing @seattleartfair at the same time also? Who’s in Seattle this Summer?
didn’t really step back to explain what’s going on here… so…. this is the first piece I’m posting for my solo show this Summer. It’s a massive body of new work, some of it site specific, slight departure & tangent from my cardboard shoes. All made from 100% recycled material consciously chosen with a purpose & story to tell. It’ll all be available July 6 online at my link, and in person til Aug18 in Seattle @minimartcitypark big reception party Sat July 13
what did I add since the last pic I posted? (Hint: I should I add a -warning😉- about it)
And if you guessed it took eating more than 5,000 skittles to make this, you were RIGHT!!

reading ‘The Kaepernick Effect’ by Dave Zirin, chockfull of interviews w student athletes inspired to kneel for the anthem - besides Colin himself, you know what pretty much all of them cited as another motivation? (hint: it’s pre 2015 BLM)
Any idea what might become of this very specifically chosen piece of trash? (Spoiler: it won’t be a shoe)
